Adventure to These Waterfalls in Negril, Jamaica

Mayfield Falls

Perfect for the adventurous type, the beautiful Mayfield Falls are located just over an hour outside of Negril. Upon arrival, you’ll feel as if you’ve entered an exotic jungle. Experience nature at its best with native wildlife surrounding the area and more than 50 exotic plant species covering every surface.

When you arrive at Mayfield Falls near Negril, you’ll have to pay the $20 entrance fee. You’ll be greeted by potential guides that will lead you through the rapids on an hour and a half-long river walk and tour. This active riverwalk consists of exploring the series of small cascades and 21 natural pools that make up the falls. These falls cater to the active type, allowing visitors to feel immersed in nature and walk directly through the streams while avoiding the tourist crowds you’ll find at some of Jamaica’s bigger falls. Work your way upstream through the water, then hike back to where you started via the adjacent bush paths.

Local tip: Keep in mind that if you take a tour on the island, most guides will expect you to tip for their service.

YS Falls

YS Falls near Negril is larger than Mayfield and one of the most popular waterfalls near Negril, Jamaica, to visit. These falls are about 90 minutes away from Skylark, but they are worth the trip! Not only are there seven cascades here, but there is plenty of room for swimming and other activities. You’ll spend most of your time viewing the beauty of the incredible falls and and swimming in the serene, spring-fed pool. Lifeguards monitor the swimming areas to ensure the safety of visitors so you can spend the day worry-free. At these falls, you can also take a stroll through the surrounding gardens or go on a thrilling zip line above the canopy!

This nature-based attraction is open Tuesday through Sunday from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Entry to the waterfalls costs $19 for adults and $10 for children. If you’d like to experience the canopy zip line ride, it is $50 for adults and $35 for children.

For those looking to venture off the beaten path, Fenton Falls, also known as the secret falls, are the closest to Negril. The falls are located just over an hour outside of Negril on private land owned by the Fentons. The secluded riverwalk begins with a hike through a pasture lined with plum and jackfruit trees that guests are encouraged to sample from. When guests reach the falls, they will see the result of three rivers meeting. This creates a stream of water that flows down the rocky hillside and fills multiple pools on its way down. While Fenton Falls are known among locals, you will rarely encounter other tourists during your visit there.

LOCAL TIPS FOR YOUR TRIP TO THE  WATERFALLS

  • Keep in mind that these pools and waterfalls are completely natural. When there is heavy rainfall in the Negril area, the currents can become more powerful and unsafe. If this has occurred, check to make sure the falls are still open.
  • Bring water shoes, especially for the river walks at Mayfield and Fenton Falls. There are usually shoe rentals available at Mayfield, but it’s always best to bring your own. These are natural springs, so parts are rocky. With shoes, you’ll be able to wade in without a worry.
  • Pack water and snacks. There is usually food and water available for purchase, but it is best to ensure you stay hydrated in our warm climate.
  • If you take a tour of the falls (or any other attraction on the island), keep in mind that most guides expect you to tip for their service.
